Peter Grainger is the first name that comes to mind whenever someone asks for a police procedural recommendation. If I created a literary dictionary, I would insert Grainger’s picture next to the definition for ‘Police Procedural’ because he fits the bill perfectly.

Grainger doesn’t care about wowing his readers with explosive mysteries and fast-paced investigations. His books are slow. He wants you to understand the procedures the police must follow when they encounter a crime.

And yet, his books never drag. He could easily bog his stories down with personal melodrama, but he prefers to let the high-quality character development and storytelling speak for themselves. We need more heroes like Smith that are not burdened by predictable issues like broken marriages.

I LOVE Peter Grainger’s books. His character, DC Smith, is a less cloying Gamache (from the Louise Penny books) – educated, wry, pragmatic, empathetic, moral, yet still a little rebellious. I will read anything he writes.
