Peter Burkill

Burkill attended the University of Portsmouth where he received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Business Studies.

Peter Burkill is a former British Airways pilot that managed to keep the 777 plane from crashing, saving all 152 people onboard.

30 Seconds to Impact is about when Peter took charge of the flight deck of the 777 and he took off from Beijing airport, there was absolutely nothing to suggest that this trip would be anything other than just a routine flight of the type he’d made so many times before. It wasn’t until moments before he landed that anything even went wrong.

Coming into Heathrow Airport, the plane suffered this inexplicable loss of power to both the engines, and suddenly it was likely that the plane would into a built up area just outside the airport, with loss of all lives on board.

Peter tells us in graphic detail his actions and thoughts when he managed to help save the plane at the very last moment thanks to this flash of inspiration which led him to change the position of the wing flaps, which seemed to gain the vehicle just enough time to make it over the perimeter fence and land on grass, just short of the runway.

For Peter and Maria, their lives after the crash have resulted in some experiences which they never would’ve expected to have happened. There’s no handbook with some rules to follow after a crash so the subsequent aftermath was laced with some events which could have been handled better from all sides, which have lead to Peter and Maria having to find strength inside of them that they never needed before.

Just over a year later, they’ve used all of these strengths to start a new chapter of the lives, beginning with leaving British Airways and celebrating a second chance to actually enjoy life. However there are still some nights that they find themselves awake, and crying about what could’ve happened that fateful day.
