Paul Fattig
Paul Fattig was born in Oregon, USA.
Paul Fattig is a retired journalist and author from the United States, known for his writings about life in the small communities and wilderness of southern Oregon.
For years, Fattig worked as a journalist reporting on stories across the West from California to Alaska. During this time, he gained recognition for his respect for everyday people, his wit, and clarity. In 2013, he quit his job to become a full-time author.
He would become known not only for his work but also for his life as he and Maureen, his wife, moved to the mountains of Oregon to reconnect with his family history. The once-neglected family house turned into a restoration project for the couple.
A man deeply connected to his roots, he loves to tell stories of his family's resilience and struggles, particularly during times of hardship and war. With a storyteller's voice and journalist's eye, he looks to both the past and the present as he reflects on the changes in the wilderness and lands of rural America.
In his work
Up Sterling Creek Without a Paddle, the author tells the story of Maureen and Paul Fattig and how they purchased a once-neglected cabin in Oregon.
They soon had to deal with vandals, the ravages of fire, as well as decay, rats, and bats. However, they would not give up, soldiering on with the restoration as they dealt with rattlesnakes, peeling logs, burned timbers, and even the threat of wildfires.
They did all this even as they prepared for an unexpected visit from the president.
Through their work, they discover the rich history of the property even as they rediscover the joy, humour, and love that had once brought them together.
Five years later, Paul Fattig published the work
The Mouse That Soared, in which he tells the stories of the Siskiyou Smokejumpers in Oregon with a particular focus on Marine Corps veteran Allen "Mouse" Owen.
The latter made history as the shortest smokejumper in the United States, proving his mettle among the bravest firefighters who parachuted into wildfires. Drawing from interviews with pioneering historians and jumpers, he shows what it is like to live at the Siskiyou Smokejumper Base.
He tells of the women and men who face physical risks and undertake dangerous missions as they build strong teamwork. There are also stories of the likes of
Operation Firefly from the Second World War, which celebrates human grit, wildlands, and courage.
