It is a crime that Miss Silver doesn’t get the same recognition as all the other great detectives of the 20th Century. Granted, she doesn’t receive quite as much attention in her novels as you would expect. In fact, that one weakness repelled me when I first discovered Patricia Wentworth.
But later on, I grew to perceive it not as a weakness but a strength. Miss Silver is the star, but the detective is not the primary attraction. Wentworth writes novels that can stand on their own, even in the absence of a sharp-witted detective.
She draws you in with the intrigue surrounding the primary cast of the novel, only pulling Miss Silver into the equation when her protagonists are at their wit’s end. It is an interesting approach to detective fiction, one you rarely see in the genre.
