Omar N. Bradley
Omar N. Bradley (Omar Nelson Bradley) was born on February 12th, 1893. Omar passed away April 8th, 1981 at 88 years old. Omar N. Bradley was born in Clark,MO, USA. Bradley attended United States Military Academy where he received a Bachelor of Science degree.
Omar N. Bradley was a World War II hero and one of the nation’s last five-star generals.
Omar's Sunday school teacher encouraged him to take the entrance exam for the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York. He had initially been saving to attend the University of Missouri in Columbia, where he intended to study law. He finished second in the West Point placement exams, held at Jefferson Barracks Military Post in St. Louis, Missouri. However, since the first-place winner could not accept the Congressional appointment, the nomination was passed on to Bradley in August of 1911.
While attending the academy, his devotion to sports hindered his academic performance, yet he still ranked 44th in a class of 164. Bradley was a baseball star and often played on semi-professional teams for no remuneration to maintain his eligibility as an amateur representing the academy.
Bradley was a member of the 1914 West Point team, and every player on that team who remained in the army ultimately became a general. During both his junior and senior seasons, he was considered one of the most outstanding college players in the nation, noted as an outfielder and power hitter with one of the best throwing arms. He chose to pursue his Army career, turning down multiple offers to play professional baseball.
In 1923, while stationed at West Point as an instructor, he became a Freemason.
In
A General’s Life, Omar recounts his youth in Missouri, his time at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point (where he graduated alongside Dwight D. Eisenhower in 1915), his tours teaching math at West Point, guarding copper mines in Montana during World War I, and his assignments on the U.S.-Mexico border. In 1941, he commanded the U.S. Army Infantry School at Fort Benning.
Bradley also describes his active duty during World War II in North Africa, Normandy, and Sicily, eventually commanding 43 divisions and 1.3 million American troops in Europe. He linked up with Soviet forces on the Elbe River in April 1945, sealing the defeat of Nazi forces. He provides vivid descriptions of key figures in Europe’s liberation, including Patton, Marshall, Churchill, Eisenhower, and Montgomery.
Additionally, he reflects on his years heading the Veterans Administration and his tenure as the first Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff beginning in 1949, as well as his role as Army Chief of Staff. In 1950, he was promoted to General of the Army (five stars) and was the senior military commander at the onset of the Korean War.
