I encourage fans of Westerns to read ‘Hard Country,’ especially older fans that have a yearning for the Westerns of old. Michael Mcgarrity’s books are not quite as action-packed as you would expect.
Instead of larger-than-life cowboys riding through towns and engaging in epic gun battles, the author’s characters feel like real people that have to go the extra mile to survive in a harsh landscape.
The descriptions are incredible. If I’m being honest, at first, I thought Mcgarrity was going too far. He kept going on and on about people’s hats and clothes. But then his voice swept me away until I could see every scene vividly in my mind. He’s a fantastic writer.
