Michael Ende: TV/Movies Based on Books

The NeverEnding Story was adapted into a classic children's fantasy film in 1984. The movie was directed by Wolfgang Petersen and starred Noah Hathaway and Barret Oliver. The film was produced by Bernd Eichinger. His children were reading the book and convinced him to make a film out of it.

Ende was originally excited for the film adaption. He worked a script advisor on the film, but would later claim that the script was rewritten without his knowing. He felt that the content deviated too far from his book and tried to halt the production. Ende sued the producers, but lost the case. The author was paid just $50,000 for the rights to the book.

The film only adapted the first half of the book. There were two sequels made The NeverEnding Story II: The Next Chapter (1990) and The NeverEnding Story III: Escape from Fantasia (1994). The second loosely follows the second half of the book while the third is an original story not based on Ende's work.

The NeverEnding Story received positive reviews and was a major hit at the box office. It remains beloved to this day.
