Matthew Perry was a Canadian-American writer, producer, and actor best known for his role as Chandler Bing on
Friends, the highly rated sitcom on NBC that aired from the mid-90s to the mid-2000s. The actor was the son of Suzanne Perry, a journalist, and John Bennett Perry, an actor. After his parents divorced, he moved to Ottawa, Canada, with his mother, who worked as a press secretary for Prime Minister Pierre Elliot Trudeau.
During his school years, Matthew Perry developed interests in tennis and comedy. He was one of the top tennis players in Canada, even ranking 17th in singles at one point. When he turned 15, he moved to Los Angeles to pursue a career in tennis but soon realized the competition was too stiff and decided to become an actor.
His early roles included parts in
Boys Will Be Boys and guest appearances in shows such as
Beverly Hills, 90210 and
Growing Pains. In 1994, he was cast as Chandler Bing on
Friends, where his sarcastic and witty character earned him critical acclaim, including Screen Actors Guild Awards and Primetime Emmy Award nominations.
Matthew Perry was always candid about his struggles with prescription medications and alcohol, which led to multiple stints in rehab. Tragically, he was found dead at the age of 54 in his Los Angeles home in 2023. The cause of death was reported as ketamine, which resulted in drowning.
