Mary Emmerling
Mary Emmerling is one of the most prominent names in American decorating. She has written numerous books and served as the creative director of
Country Home magazine. She also hosts the
Country At Home TV show on HGTV, which aired for seven years.
Her career began at Mademoiselle, and she was subsequently asked to join
House Beautiful. She brought along a freelance gal that she worked with, named Martha Stewart. They’d always talked about writing a book together, where Martha would handle the food and Mary would work on the table settings.
While Mary worked for
House Beautiful, she was also writing American Country, her first book. She was traveling around the country, shooting homes for both her book and HB, which would eventually be published in 1980.
She opened a successful shop in NYC during the 80s, selling painted furniture and country-style accessories like ironstone pottery and rag rugs, primitive paintings, and quilts. Calvin Klein and Ralph Lauren shopped at her American Country Store, as did numerous celebrities seeking the country look for which she was famous. After a few months, she quit working at HB to run her shop full-time.
Mary continued freelancing at various decorating magazines, and then, in 1993, her own
Mary Emmerling’s Country Magazine was launched.
Mary Emmerling’s Romantic Country: Style That’s Straight from the Heart. Mary’s approach to American country style has always revealed the heart of a romantic: inviting, cozy interiors brightened with bouquets of vintage florals; pampering baths and all-white bedrooms; the fragrance of Casablanca lilies and the sensual glow of candlelight. Mary’s not a conventional or clichéd take on romance; however, it's an updated and clean take that is inviting to both men and women, modernists and sentimentalists. In this book, she shares her secrets for creating romance where you find it and bringing touches of charm to any setting.
From an enchanting cottage in Los Angeles to a young family’s bungalow in Tucson, this high-rise in Houston to this small shack on Long Island, this book is filled with over 250 lush photographs that offer an abundance of ideas for making any home that much more inviting, nurturing, and welcoming.
The “Romance A to Z” section alone highlights elements that instantly create intimacy, such as canopy beds, dressing tables, window seats, fireplaces, clawfoot tubs, chaise lounges, ceiling fans, big, snuggly sofas, and more.
Mary even shares her own remarkable love story, which inspired the book in the first place, along with a directory of her favorite stores and resources for romantic furnishings and accessories nationwide.
