Mario Puzo: TV/Movies Based on Books

The TV drama miniseries The Fortunate Pilgrim was based on Mario's novel of the same name and consisted of two episodes that were released on April 3, 1988 and April 4, 1988.

Mario Puzo had several books made into movie adaptations. Most famously was The Godfather. The film premiered at the Loew's State Theatre on March 14, 1972 and was widely released in the United States on March 24, 1972. It was the highest-grossing film of 1972.

Then along came The Godfather Part II released in the United States on December 20, 1974. The Godfather Part II serves as both a sequel and a prequel to the 1972 film The Godfather. The film was selected for preservation in the U.S. National Film Registry of the Library of Congress in 1993.

The Godfather Part III was released in the United States on Christmas Day, December 25, 1990. This is the final installment of the franchise based on Mario Puzo's novel. The film also includes fictionalized accounts of two real-life events: the 1978 death of Pope John Paul I and the Papal banking scandal of 1981–1982, both linked to Michael Corleone's business affairs.

For the 30th anniversary of The Godfather, a recut version of the film titled The Godfather Coda: The Death of Michael Corleone was released on December 4, 2020. The recut includes changes to both the beginning and the ending of the film and some re-edited scenes and musical cues.

The Sicilian was based on Mario's novel of the same name and was released on October 23, 1987. The film follows the story of Salvatore Giuliano, the infamous bandit who tried to liberate early 1950s Sicily from Italian rule.

A Time to Die was based on Mario's novel Six Graves to Munich which was released in 1982. The film marked the final appearance of Sir Rex Harrison, after filming he retired and returned to the stage.

Mario Puzo also wrote several screenplays most notably Superman (1978), Superman II (1980), and Superman II: The Richard Donner Cut (2006).

    What can I say? I have yet to read his work, but if the Godfather movies are any indication I will indeed enjoy his efforts. Would love to hear from anyone who has read his novels.
