Maria Goodavage
Maria Goodavage is a popular author, editor, and journalist known for her work on dogs and the people who care for them.
She first came to prominence while working at prestigious US publications as a staff writer. Writing for the San Francisco Chronicle and USA Today, she reported on a wide range of topics and, over the years, became a proficient storyteller.
Besides her work in the papers, she is a regular columnist for one of the most widely read dog blogs in the world - Dogster.com. At the latter, she is a featured writer and editor who combines her passion for human animal relationships and animal behaviour with her expertise as a reporter.
Maria Goodavage’s work is known for its vivid storytelling, expert interviews, and deep reporting. She usually showcases the emotional bonds and hard work that build the relationships between people and dogs.
Besides her work as a writer, Maria Goodavage is a frequent TV speaker who shares her knowledge of dogs with audiences. She has appeared at public events and on national TV shows to champion a better understanding of the contributions animals make to humanity.
She currently makes her home in Francisco, where she lives with Gus, her Labrador retriever.
Maria Goodavage published her first work,
The Bay Area Dog Lover’s Companion, in 1995 to guide travellers and residents of San Francisco on all aspects of living with dogs in the city.
She suggests camping spots, parks, trails, and beaches that welcome dogs, as well as pet-friendly shops, restaurants, hotels, and cafes. Goodavage uses a paw rating system to show the dog-friendliness of each location where an owner may take their dog.
She also includes current leash laws and maps, making it easier for owners to enjoy adventures while out with their dogs.
In a follow-up to her debut, Maria Goodavage published one for Los Angeles titled
The Dog Lover’s Companion to Los Angeles.
She provides insights into the best pet-friendly spots and organizations around Los Angeles. There are many places to go, such as canine couture boutiques, snug bed-and-breakfasts, chic restaurants, and drool-worthy beaches.
As in her previous work, she uses a paw ranking system to highlight each location's dog-friendliness.
In
Top Dog, Maria Goodavage takes a different direction as she tells the story of military dog Lucca.
Trained to sniff out explosives while on a leash, she had served with both regular infantry and special forces. Maria follows her life-saving and tense adventures, including rooftop firefights and the discovery of explosives.
She also tells the stories of her handlers, Juan Rodriguez and Chris Willingham, as well as those of other Marines and brave dogs.
She shows the bond between the dog and her handlers to showcase how their connection, loyalty, and courage helped them endure the trauma and brutality of war.
