Margaret Coel is one of those authors I read when I need something simple and comforting. I know people who read her Wind River Reservation series because they like the drama: the conflict between traditional Native American values and the modern culture that is starting to infiltrate the community.
Those aspects don’t do anything for me. I read Coel’s books for the mysteries. Don’t get me wrong. I like the setting, and the Native American elements are a blessing rather than a weakness, adding stakes to each story.
But for the most part, I frequent this author’s bibliography primarily because I know what to expect. Her books have a formula, sort of. I walk into each novel knowing that someone will commit a crime, and Father O’Malley will step in to solve the problem. That formula appeals to me, and so does the predictability.
Her Wind River Reservation mysteries with Father John O’Malley and attorney, Vicky Holden are very good. The interaction between these two make the books.
