Lynsey Addario is a well-known photojournalist who made her name covering human rights issues and the role of women in traditional societies and conflict zones. She has also written a lot of stories as a war correspondent starting with the war in Afghanistan.
Addario was brought up in Westport, Connecticut to parents who operated and owned a salon and both worked as hairdressers. She had a very unconventional upbringing with her siblings, parents, and friends of her parents, many of whom were queer.
When she was 12, Lynsey Addario was gifted a used camera by her father and she taught herself how to use it. Since she was too shy to take pictures of people, she used to photograph the night sky, cemeteries, and flowers. It was while she was in college that she began to take pictures of people for the first time.
Following her graduation, she moved to South America to become a professional news photographer. But could not get a job at the
Buenos Aires Herald given that she did not understand the language and had no experience.
Addario would ultimately get a job with
The Herald but after a year, she moved back to New York City where she got a job with the
Associated Press. After working freelance for several publications, she moved to Afghanistan to cover the suffering of the women under the Taliban.
When war broke out in 2001, she went back to Afghanistan and covered the war. Since that time, she has covered conflicts in Syria, Iraq, Yemen, Libya, Somalia, South Sudan, and Darfur among other places. For her work, she was named one of the most influential photographers by
Photo Magazine.
In 2015, Lynsey Addario published her debut work
It’s What I Do, a memoir that tells of her relentless pursuit of truth across all manner of countries that experienced conflict. It all began with the breakout of war following the September 11 terrorist attacks that got her called back to cover the
War Against Terror in Afghanistan. She sets out across the world and faces the chaos of crisis that results in a wild and chaotic life as she reported all over the world.

Of Love & War is a collection of photographs that showcase the horrible consequences of war. The photographs show the abuse and trauma women have to endure, Libyan belligerents exchanging fire, and American soldiers conducting rescue operations in addition to essays, letters, and journal entries from a range of writers.
