Lothar-Günther Buchheim
Lothar-Günther Buchheim was born on February 6th, 1918. Lothar-Günther passed away February 22nd, 2007 at 89 years old. Lothar-Günther Buchheim was born in Weimar, Germany.
Lothar-Gunther Buchheim was a German painter, author, and wartime journalist under the Nazi regime.
During World War II, he served as a war correspondent aboard U-boats and ships. He was a Sonderfuhrer in a propaganda unit of the Kriegsmarine during WWII, and wrote about experiences he had on minesweepers, submarines, and destroyers. He also took photographs and made drawings.
While working as a Leutnant zur See during the autumn of 1941, he joined the crew of U-96 on her seventh patrol during the Battle of the Atlantic. His orders were to describe and photograph the U-boat in action. From these experiences he penned a short story titled “The Oak-Leaves Patrol”. He ended the war as an Oberleutnant zur See.
After the war, he worked as an art collector, artist, art auctioneer, gallery owner, and art publisher. He established an art publishing house, and wrote books about Otto Mueller, Georges Braque, Pablo Picasso, and Mex Beckmann. He also collected pieces by German and French Expressionist artists, pieces that have been derided as being degenerate during the Nazi period, and so he was able to purchase them at cheap prices.
His artworks, which were collected together in a gallery on the banks of the Starnberger See, range from some heavily decorated cars to a variety of mannequins standing or seated as themselves visitors to the gallery, which challenges the division between art work and visitor.
Besides
Das Boot, he wrote books about the Second World War, including a sequel, called
The Fortress, which is based on his travels home across France in 1944. He also wrote a nonfiction trilogy about U-boats.
Das Boot is the thrilling war time novel which inspired Wolfgang Petersen’s Oscar nominated and blockbuster flick.
The novel was written by an actual survivor of Germany’s U-boat fleet, and is one of the most exhilarating tales of naval warfare ever published. It’s a story filled with almost unbearable suspense and tension.
In autumn 1941, this German U-boat commander and his crew set off on yet another hazardous patrol in the Battle of the Atlantic. Over the weeks that followed they brave the ocean’s stormy waters looking for British supply ships to destroy. However their targets travel in these well-guarded convoys.
Then when contact finally does happen, the hunter soon becomes the hunted, and this cat-and-mouse game starts while the U-boat hides down deep under the surface of the sea. Rather quickly, claustrophobia becomes an enemy just about as frightening as the depth charges that explode all around them.
