I bounced off King’s Sherlock Holmes series when I first encountered it. I had no idea she had written anything else until I saw this list. Everyone that loves the author is always raving about the Holmes books.

But The Beekeeper’s Apprentice repelled me. King made a mistake when she wrote Mary Russel because the heroine was essentially a Mary Sue. She had too many gifts, making for a less interesting read.

I only stuck around because King has enjoyable prose. Her books are easy to read, so I persevered. Today, I can’t tell whether or not I like Mary. She’s still a Mary Sue, but I don’t hate her. More importantly, King writes solid mysteries. For now, that is enough.
