Lauren Bacall was primarily known as one of the best actresses from the golden age of Hollywood. During her time, she made her name with provocative portrayals of women who showed the world their hard-edged pragmatism, even though this was all to hide their softcore underneath it all.
It was in 1941 that Lauren Bacall began her modeling career. However, the job did not pay much and she had to supplement her earnings working at the
Stage Door Canteen as a hostess and as a theater usher. In 1942, she appeared in Franklin Street the play as an ingenue even though the play was never performed in New York.
It was in 1943 that a film director’s wife saw her photo on the cover of
Harper’s Bazaar. She was subsequently cast in the director's 1944 published work
To Have and Have Not, which earned her overnight acclaim acting alongside Bogart.
‘
She fell for Bogart while filming and married the man in 1945. Bacall would also go on to act in several successful movies during the 1940s and 1950s. When she lost her husband Bogart in 1957, she married Jason Robards the actor who she divorced in 1969.
Lauren Bacall published her first novel
By Myself in 1978. The work chronicles her life growing up in New York City during the 1930s. She was the daughter of a single mother and was brought up in a Jewish family that was very supportive. However, the crux of the novel is how she met Bogart, fell in love, and married him.
Now is a novel that Lauren Bacall published in 1994 in which she chronicled her achievements and losses in her personal life as well as her career. In this memoir, she filled the gaps from her first memory, even as she reflected on her family life including her marriage to Jason Robards, Bogart, her friendships with John Huston and Laurence Olivier, and her television, screen, and TV projects.
More than a decade after publishing her second novel, Lauren Bacall published her third work
By Myself and Then Some. Once again, she reflected on the past and how she matured and became a worldly woman who was one of the most respected actors in Hollywood. While she wrote a lot about her time in Hollywood, she also told personal stories of tragedy and hope, single motherhood, and family.
