He is a three time NBA champion, winning the Finals in 1981, 1984, and 1986. From 1984 to 1986, he won three straight MVPs., making him the only forward in NBA history to do so. He was also a member of the 1992 US Olympic basketball team, which is known as the “Dream Team”.
Growing up in French Lick, Indiana, he was a local basketball star. He was highly recruited, and had initially signed on to play college basketball for the Indiana Hoosiers for coach Bob Knight. But he dropped out after just a month, returning to French Lick and went to a local college.
The following year he went to Indiana State University, playing three years for the Sycamores. The Boston Celtics picked him 6th overall in the 1978 NBA draft following his second year at Indiana State, he elected to stay in college, returning for the 1978-79 season. He led his team to an undefeated regular season. It wrapped with a national championship game match-up of Michigan State versus Indiana State and featured Bird’s first match-up against Magic Johnson, kicking off a career long rivalry the two would share for more than a decade. Michigan State beat Indiana State, thus ending the Sycamores’ unbeaten streak.
The 1979-80 season, he led the Celtics to a 32 win improvement over the following season before they were eliminated from the playoffs during the conference finals.
While with the Celtics, he played the majority of his career with Robert Parish (center) and Kevin McHale (forward), which is considered to be the greatest front court in NBA history.

The soul and the heart of a champion. His career, his life, and his game. In order to understand basketball, you first have to understand Larry Bird. Arguably the greatest all around player that game’s ever known, he led the Celtics up from the cellar all the way to 3 world championships, collecting 3 NBA MVPs along the way. But despite such massive accomplishments, he’s rarely spoken to the press, and a lot about the man has stayed a mystery.
Inside this book, you will learn some of his most private feelings about: the heartbreak of his dad’s suicide and his own failed marriage, as well as the momentous choice to transfer from Bobby Knight’s Indiana University in order to go to Indiana State. The single minded discipline which turned a small town hero into a national superstar. The fierce Laker-Celtic rivalry. The Boston Garden and the legendary Celtic charm.
