Kim’s books are an acquired taste. A few months ago, I would have told you that I wasn’t the target audience for her novels. I kept bouncing off every Kim Vogel Sawyer book I read, giving up after two or three chapters.

The stories felt slow and boring. ‘Waiting For Summer’s Return’ changed my tune. I initially thought that the novel was somehow superior to its predecessors. But I no longer buy that argument.

I think I bought the book at the perfect time. I was stuck at home. The pandemic had forced me to slow down. With nothing better to do, I could afford to sit there and read at my own pace. It took a few days, but Kim finally hooked me.

The story was just as slow as I remembered, but I loved the book all the same because I was immersed. I felt like I was sitting with the characters, breathing the air of a historical era I knew nothing about. I encourage anyone struggling with the pacing of Kim’s books to slow down.
