John W. Hackett

John W. Hackett (John Winthrop Hackett) was born on November 5th, 1910. John passed away September 9th, 1997 at 86 years old. John W. Hackett was born in Perth, Western Australia.

John W. Hackett was a university leader, writer, and British soldier. Popularly known as “Shan”, he initially came from Australia as the son of a very well-known family with interests in exploration, business, and politics.

After his education in Australia, he joined the British Army, where he served for several years. During his stint in the Army, he served in several regiments in Trans-Jordan and Mandatory Palestine, where he gained recognition early on for exceptional service.

By World War II, John W. Hackett was a senior combat officer, and he would go on to fight in North Africa and the Middle East. During this time, he was injured several times in battle when his tank was hit. For his valour in combat, he was honoured with the Distinguished Service Order and the Military Cross.

Hackett would then be involved in the establishment of the Special Air Service and the Long Range Desert Group. While commanding the 4th Parachute Brigade during the Battle of Arnhem, he was seriously wounded and captured by the Germans.

Working with the Dutch resistance, John W. Hackett escaped from the hospital. He was then hidden and cared for by a Dutch family for several months before he managed to escape back into the UK.

Following the war, Hackett served in the Middle East before entering university and pursuing a career in education leadership. He also wrote reflections and books drawn from his military experience.

In his debut work, Economic Planning in France, John Hackett studied how France guided its economy back to recovery from the Second World War.

The work explains how French leaders created multi-year plans that set goals for national growth, industry, transport, and farming. He examines how committees, experts, and government offices worked together to develop the plans.

Hackett also shows how planning connected private businesses with public policy rather than controlling them. He describes how the country tried to balance market activity with state direction to modernize and rebuild the economy.

In 1978, John W. Hackett published The Third World War: A Future History, a fictional account of a mid-1980s global war.

The work describes a war between the Warsaw Pact and NATO that began with rising tensions across Europe. Small conflicts soon turn into a global conflagration involving air, sea, and land battles.

John W. Hackett shows air combat over capital cities, naval battles in the Atlantic, and tank battles in the heart of Europe. He also explains how the military buildup and political decisions led to the crisis.
