I am slowly learning to exist in the fictional worlds my favorite authors create. That was not always the case. Take John Lawton. I discovered his work a decade or so ago and dismissed him because his stories were littered with detours. The first act would always proceed at a snail’s pace.

It frustrated me. Fast forward to today: I re-read Lawton’s books every other month, picking one at random from my library. They never disappoint because I have learned to enjoy the detours. If you think about it, detours are part of life.

Your life doesn’t jump from one major incident to another. Lawton’s books follow a similar blueprint. These days, I find myself enjoying the mundanity of those first few chapters.
