John Kenneth Galbraith

John Kenneth Galbraith was born on October 15th, 1908. John passed away April 29th, 2006 at 97 years old. John Kenneth Galbraith was born in Iona Station, Ontario, Canada. Galbraith attended Ontario Agricultural College where he received a BSAg degree and the University of California, Berkeley where he received a MA and a PhD.

John Kenneth Galbraith was best known as a Canadian-American political figure, author, and economist. His ideas on the role of the government in society and the workings of the economy would make him a very popular economist during the 1900s.

He wrote many popular books explaining how consumer culture and big companies affected the economy. Galbraith also described how modern business and industry did not work according to the older models of competition.

John Galbraith made more people aware of the significant influence large corporations have in life, even as he also talks about the many limits of free markets.

He has also worked in several roles in the United States government. During World War II, he put in place strategies to prevent shortages and fight inflation through price controls. Later, he advised several American presidents and worked as a US ambassador in India.

John Kenneth Galbraith spent several decades as a professor at Harvard University, teaching economics. He has also written a bunch of essays and articles for journals and magazines. His style was often described as clear and simple, such that his writing could be read even by non-economists.

In his 1968 published work The Triumph, Kenneth Galbraith writes a satire about American diplomacy set in a made-up country in South America.

When a dictator is toppled, American officials scramble to find their footing as they deal with pride, political pressure, and fear of communism, which hampers clear thinking.

The author shows that reporters, ambassadors, and diplomats often portray themselves as confident due to a desire to have control over events they sometimes do not understand fully.

Galbraith uses humor to show that politicians can sometimes make misguided choices that can make things worse.

In his 1990 published work, A Tenured Professor, Galbraith tells the story of a Harvard economics professor named Montgomery Marvin.

The man invented a model to show how investors get careless and excited, and uses the money he gets to support liberal causes.

With Marjie, his wife, he finds ideas such as forming Political Rectitude Committees, establishing peace study programs, and labelling products made by female-led companies.

Earlier in the 1950s, John Kenneth Galbraith published The Great Crash, in which he explained how the Stock Market Crash in 1929 resulted in the Great Depression.

Spreading contagion throughout the economy like a tsunami, it destroyed many industries as it wiped out jobs and brought down governments in Europe. Many people found themselves out of jobs and suffered from widespread poverty until 1935, when things began to improve.

Galbraith asks if there is a chance a similar disaster could recur.
