The Last Child is magnificent. If you’re anything like me, and you can’t stand child characters in fiction, don’t let 13-year-old Johnny put you off. This isn’t one of those juvenile YA stories about angsty teens with ridiculous lives.

The Last Child is as good as literary fiction gets. Admittedly, literary fiction doesn’t do anything for me these days. So maybe The Last Child works because it has strayed from the arena of literary fiction.

I don’t know. Now that I’m thinking about it, I don’t know which genre Hart writes in. It doesn’t matter. The Last Child is phenomenal. You cannot help but cheer for little Johnny while hoping that someone would give his mother a good shake.

One of these days, I may actually read Hart’s other novels. But for now, I’d rather read The Last Child for the third time.
