I did not expect much from Gilstrap’s Jonathan Grave series. My school library was filled to the brim with ridiculous novels featuring army vets that spent their days saving the world from dastardly villains. Most of them recycled the same plots, relying on the hero’s charisma to keep readers engaged.
Jonathan Grave fits that description a little too perfectly. But I’ve decided to give the character a pass because Gilstrap’s writing is compelling. His stories are more intricately plotted. The characters have a level of depth you don’t expect to see in this genre.
Gilstrap is a great storyteller. He deserves far more credit than I gave him when I first discovered his books.
I discovered John Gilstrap not too long ago and thoroughly enjoy his books. I recommended him to my daughter who has also read through them. I am anxiously waiting for my turn to come up on Harm’s Way!
I just finished Harm’s Way and the author did not disappoint. One of the things that make this author extra special, outside of his story telling, is the lack of swear words in the narrative. He commented in the author’s notes of one of his books that a reader was so disappointed in the language of a book she had just read and cited how often a swear word was used. He read back thru his book and based on that comment, rewrote the book without the swear words except for one which he said was fitting in the place it was used. I would have to agree. Following that, he has stopped the use of that language. His comment in an email was that no one has complained about that even though there are characters you would expect to use swear words. I find that very commendable!
