John Diamond

John Diamond was born on May 10th, 1953. John passed away March 2nd, 2001 at 47 years old. John Diamond was born in Hackney, London, England.

John Diamond was a British author, broadcaster, and journalist who was renowned for his honesty and eloquence, particularly after his cancer diagnosis.

His first job in the workplace was when he got a job working as a drama and English teacher before he got into journalism. Over his career, he wrote for The Times, Sunday Mirror, and The Sunday Times. Writing for the papers, he became very popular for his intelligent and witty opinion columns.

John Diamond made a name for himself as a talk show host and for his appearances in the media. He would gain a lot of attention when he got married to Nigella Lawson, the famous food writer, which made him one half of one of the most recognized couples in London.

When Diamond was diagnosed with oral and throat cancer in 1997, he acquired an even bigger megaphone, as he detailed his journey with what has been called dark humor and brutal honesty. For his work, he won Columnist of the Year and had a documentary following his treatment and recovery on the BBC.

Diamond had to undergo multiple surgeries and lost most of his tongue, but continued to write and spend time with family and friends.

He died in March of 2001.

In 1998, John Diamond published the work C: Because Cowards Get Cancer Too.

Diamond chronicles his journey with cancer as he combines dark humor, anger, and honesty. He got the news that he had cancer just before he turned 44 and had to undergo a barrage of tests, and eventually lost a lot of weight and most of his tongue.

But unlike most cancer patients, he insists that he is not a hero but rather that he is scared, even as he pokes fun at medical cliches, has bouts of rage, and often annoys his wife.

He also seethes over what he calls the nonsense of a positive attitude and asserts that those who survive are not necessarily mentally stronger.
In Snake Oil, which he published in 2001, John Diamond provides a critique of alternative medicine, which he penned from his deathbed.

He used logic, personal stories, and facts to debunk what he calls imaginary cures such as coffee enemas, potion pills, and homeopathy. But it is not all negative, as he also shares a collection of his best columns on medicine, daily life, and illness.
