Jimmy Barnes
Jimmy Barnes (James Dixon Swan) was born on April 28th, 1956 and is currently 69 years old. Jimmy Barnes was born in Glasgow, Scotland.
Jimmy Barnes is a Scottish-born Australian singer. His career, as a solo artist as well as fronting Cold Chisel has made him one of the most popular and one of the bestselling Australian music artists of all time.
John, Jimmy’s older brother, became a successful musician as the founder and lead singer of Swanee. It was John that encouraged and taught Jimmy how to sing, since he was not interested initially.
Jimmy briefly sang for Swanee, his brother’s band. In late 1975, he joined Orange, a harder edged band with Don Walker (songwriter and organist), Steve Prestwich (drums), and Ian Moss (guitarist), and Les Kaczmarek (bass guitar).
They changed their name to Cold Chisel and started developing a strong presence on the local music scene. Jimmy’s relationship with the group was often volatile, leading to him leaving several times, leaving Ian to cover vocal duties until Jimmy came back.
They moved to Melbourne in 1976, before moving to Sydney. Progress was slow and Jimmy announced he was leaving again in 1977 to join his brother in Feather. But his farewell gig with Cold Chisel went so well that he decided to stay in the band. One month later, they got signed.
Cold Chisel won numerous TV Week/Countdown Awards and released 5 studio albums between 1978 and 1984. They broke up in December of 1983.
Less than one month after Cold Chisel broke up, he launched his solo career. He put a band together that included Mal Eastick, Bruce Howe, Arnott, Chris Stockley, and started touring and writing their first album. Bodyswerve, the album they put together, debuted at number one on the Australian charts.
Killing Time: Short Stories From the Long Road Home is a series of short stories of misadventure, adventure, loss, and love. It’s vintage Jimmy.
Witty, outrageous, warm, and wise, this book shares over 40 yarns reflecting on his epic life. From one night spent in a haunted studio in upstate New York, this encounter with a soul legend while in Memphis, and one doomed haircut in Thailand to this madcap misunderstanding in a Japanese ski resort, a much too revealing appearance for a Sydney charity, and a family feud on this remote coral atoll.
Jimmy is never a bystander. Stories happen to him. And not only does he recall each circumstance, he has got the ability to distill the moment in such a way that is both poetic and not at all contrived. He is chaotic, funny, insightful, and heartbreaking.
