Jill Bolte Taylor is a neuroanatomist, public speaker, and author. Jill started studying severe mental illnesses due to her brother’s psychosis.
During the early 1990s, she was a postdoctoral fellow at Harvard Medical School, where she was involved in mapping out the brain in order to determine just how many cells communicate with one another.
She had a massive stroke on December 10, 1996. Jill’s own personal experience with a stroke and the 8 year recovery that followed influenced her work as a speaker and a scientist. She gave the very first TED talk which went viral online, after which her book became a
New York Times bestseller, spending 63 weeks on the list, and peaked at #4.
Her stroke was caused by bleeding from this abnormal congenital connection between this vein and artery in the left hemisphere of her brain, an arteriovenous malformation. On December 27, 1996 she underwent major brain surgery in order to remove this golf ball sized clot which had been placing pressure on the language centers in the left hemispheres in her brain.
She was named to
Time’s 2008 Time 100 list of the 100 most influential people in the entire world.
My Stroke of Insight got the top “Books for a Better Life” Book Award in the Science category in 2009.
My Stroke of Insight chronicles how a brain scientist’s own stroke led to enlightenment.
December 10, 1996. Jill, a 37 year old Harvard trained brain scientist experienced this massive stroke in the left hemisphere of her brain. While she observed her mind deteriorate to the point that she was unable to talk, walk, write, read, or recall any of her life, all within just 4 hours, she alternated between the euphoria of the kinesthetic and intuitive right brain, in which she felt this sense of total peace and well being, and the sequential and logical left brain, which recognized that she was having a stroke and enabled her to get help before she was totally lost. It’d take 8 years for her to make a full recover.
For her, it was a revelation and a blessing. It taught her that by ‘stepping to the right’ of our left brains, we’re able to uncover feelings of well being which are often sidelined by ‘brain chatter’.
Jill provides a valuable recovery guide for those people that are touched by brain injury and is an inspiring testimony which inner peace is accessible to anybody.
