James Lee is one of the top-notch mystery and fiction writers I know up to date. The writing style is excellent, with good character development and vivid descriptions of situations. After reading the preceding books, I see how the setting has developed and progressed over time. Detective Robicheaux is one of those guys who are good at heart and believes in justice and welfare for others even though he is fighting his demons. The Neon Rain surprised me with a handful of poetic prose, giving the story a dripping atmosphere. The New Orleans setting really drew me to the story.
Like most contemporary readers, I was intimidated by the Dave Robicheaux series. By the time I discovered the series, it had 22 novels, which is a lot. Again, like most contemporary readers, my first instinct was to skip to the middle or even the end.
But hardcore fans encouraged me to start at the beginning. After reading four books in this series, I finally understand why the novels are so popular. First of all, I don’t know why the size of this series was so daunting. The individual books are tiny.
Secondly, Dave is the most compelling character I’ve ever encountered in this genre. He has so many weaknesses, and he triumphs over them as many times as he fails. Nonetheless, there’s plenty of fun to be had with these books. They are not the nonstop train of misery and heartache people expect.
Another good author that got lost in the shuffle. I plan on reading some of his books in 2024.
The Neon Rain – 1st book I’ve read by this author – audio version. I think I will try some of his other series and/or stand alones before going any further in this series. But first I have to catch up on all the books that arrived in Libby at the same time…..of course!
I read all of these books until number 23 when I quit after listening to two chapters because of the use of racial slurs. Up until then, the books were interesting and it was one of my go to series. Seeing from reading here that he is 87 years old, I now understand the use of the words but my understanding will not convince me to pick up another book.
I started reading this author again. I know I have read several of his books quite a while ago and I hate it that I can’t remember which ones. Reading “The House of the Rising Sun” and liking it so far.
