All Creatures Great and Small, All Things Bright and Beautiful, and All Things Wise and Wonderful are each enjoyable reads that document his early days a veterinarian in England and teach you about the countryside in the Dales and Yorkshire. With excellent writing, each one takes you along for his journey and you meet some incredible characters along the way.
Certain antics of these characters are sure to make you laugh out loud or even cry, when things do not go too well for them. The books are both fascinating and touching, and are must reads for any animal lover.
As a child, I loved ‘All Creatures Great and Small’ for obvious reasons. But then I grew up, revisited the books, and found that I still loved them. They have a whimsy that reminds me of my childhood.
Who wouldn’t want to live in a place where your biggest concern is a cow in labor? The most significant advantage of reading these books today, as an adult, is that I can use the internet to investigate the truth behind these stories.
If you’ve never read up on Alfred Wight’s life, I urge you to do so. I know they told us that ‘All Creatures Great and Small’ was based on actual events and characters, but I don’t think I believed them until I looked into the author’s life.
