Has anyone heard the theory that bad movies are usually based on decent books? I am starting to believe it. I hated The Unholy. It wasn’t the worst horror movie I had ever watched.

But it wasted a lot of potential, which is why my response was so strong. The Unholy had every ingredient required to make a memorable horror movie. All the scary scenes were brimming with possibilities. But the execution was incredibly poor.

On the other hand, James Herbert’s ‘Shrine’ told a decent story. Was it the scariest novel ever? No, but it was a passable introduction to Herbert’s work. At the very least, it delivered on the potential I saw in the adaptation. If you’re tempted to watch The Unholy, don’t bother. Stick with the book.
