As a lover of historical fiction I have always been a fan of Jack Higgins who combines historical fact with thriller to make for some blockbuster novels. From his novels I can get some entertainment and historical fact reading about prominent persons and even such as John Dillinger, the Cuban Missile Crisis and the Korean War.
Jack Higgins’The Eagle Has Landed is on my all time favorite list. The plot is intriguing and I surprisingly found myself caring about all the characters which in a novel about Nazis vs the allies is quite something.
One thing I like about the novel is that Jack Higgins portrays both the villains and the good guys as people first. He makes a point of showing that while some Nazi leadership was definitely evil, some were just normal people that found themselves on the wrong side.
I must be the dumbest millennial in the world. I have heard the phrase ‘The Eagle Has Landed’ all my life. But I had no idea that it was based on a popular novel which, in turn, became a popular movie.
The book did not disappoint. But the movie was even more astounding because it features so many famous actors that I have seen in various contemporary shows and films. The adaptation is somewhat disturbing because the actors are so young, especially Donald Sutherland.
In the decades since I first saw him on the big screen, he’s always looked the same. Watching ‘The Eagle Has Landed’ is like peering into the past.
