Jabari Asim

Jabari Asim was born on August 11th, 1962 and is currently 62 years old. Jabari Asim was born in St. Louis, Missouri, USA. Asim attended Northwestern University.

Jabari Asim is best known as a playwright, poet, and author. Asim is also employed at the Boston, Massachusetts-based Emerson College where he lectures on publishing, literature, and writing. He has also worked as an editor and was famously the editor-in-chief of the NAACP-published The Crisis.

He was the recipient of a nonfiction fellowship in 2009 awarded by the Guggenheim Memorial Foundation. Between 2008 and 2010, he worked at the University of Illinois, where he was an African American Studies scholar in residence working in the Department of Journalism.

For nearly a dozen years, Jabari was deputy editor at The Washington Post where he edited the Education Review, the book review section, poetry, and children's books. He was also a syndicated columnist for the Washington Post Writers Group, and for a long time, he wrote popular articles on social and political issues.

Before that, Jabari Asim worked for the St. Louis Post Dispatch and made history as the only African American to ever become a supervisor of publishing at a major metropolitan publication. During that time, he also worked for the weekend paper as an arts editor in addition to copyediting the commentary pages and the daily editorial.

In 2001, Jabari Asim published Road to Freedom a work set in 1865. The lead is Extra Taplin, a ten-year-old who calls a plantation in North Carolina home and is set free by Union soldiers. But now they need to deal with their new freedoms, even as they have to support themselves.

Whose Toes Are Those? Is a work that Jabari published in 2006. The board book explores a range of topics through the story of a sparkly-eyed girl with some very cute toes. Asim makes use of the girl's toes and feet to teach colors and simple numbers.
