J.D. Kirk’s debut novel surprised me. My librarian thought it was a little formulaic. But she hates everything these days, probably because she reads so much crime fiction. She can’t help but nitpick every novel she encounters.
Personally, I think Kirk did wonders with ‘A Litter of Bones,’ especially when you realize that it was his first novel. I have to assume that each book will get better until the author finally masters his raft.
Though, I don’t think he has far to go. ‘A Litter of Bones’ is surprisingly polished. My only gripe is the length. The book is tiny. I know that new authors are encouraged to keep their debut novels short. But I prefer meaty books of 600 to 800 pages. Hopefully, the other novels in his bibliography are longer.
Fully agree with you, I can see your librarian’s point mind you, but something about the characters, setting and the audio book delivery works for me.
I’m struggling with the most recent DI Heather Filson book, I think it’s more about the narrator than the material.
Librarian here, I really enjoyed A Litter of Bones! I thought it was a great first novel! There is humor, character development and the narrator of the audio books is top notch. I’m working my way through the series and can’t wait to dive into the next one!
His plots, character, character interaction and dark humour are spot on. I have read all of J.D. Kirk’s books and cannot wait for more.
Yeah I love them – I listen to them and the narrator is fantastic for them. One of those narrators that enhances a book.
Absolutely love his books especially the Hoon series. Gradually working my way through the Logan novels. The characters re amazing!
Excellent writer who knows that the characters and their relationships are far more important than the crime which they are investigating.
Eagerly awaiting next installment of every series he writes.
LOVE! The Logan and Hoon series! It’s like when I read them I don’t want them to end… lol I wish he could write faster.. love all his characters. I haven’t yet started the Filson series, so those are next. Can’t wait, I need more hours in a day!
Fabulous series! The characters have become “family” and I feel everything they are going through. I actually admit to having a bit of a crush on Tyler, lol. I’ve read the first 14 in the DCI Logan series, and now I’m trying to pace myself, because I don’t want them to be finished 🙁 Write faster, JD!!
I love all the Logan books. Great characters, plots, and humor.
I love the Hoon comics! Robert and Bertha are so funny.
