Ian Dunbar

Ian Dunbar was born on April 15th, 1947 and is currently 79 years old. Ian Dunbar was born in United Kingdom. Dunbar attended the Royal Veterinary College (London University) where he received a veterinary degree and a Special Honours degree in Physiology & Biochemistry and the University of California, Berkeley where he received a doctorate in ethology.

Ian Dunbar has written 6 Non-Fiction Books. The first was released in 1996 with the book How to Teach a New Dog Old Tricks. The most recently released was Barking Up the Right Tree which was released in 2023. There are no upcoming non-fiction books by Ian at this time.

Ian Dunbar has also written the Happy Healthy Pet series which has 85 books including Dog Behavior and Kitten Care & Training.

Ian Dunbar is an ethologist, veterinarian, and dog trainer.

He designed and taught the world’s first off-leash puppy socialization and training classes called SIRIUS Puppy Training in 1982. Right after, he created and developed the San Francisco SPCA’s Animal Behavior Department, the American Kennel Club’s Gazette “Behavior” column, which he penned for 7 years, and the K9 GAMES, which were held first in San Francisco in 1993 and continue as annual events in France and Japan.

For 5 seasons he hosted the popular UK TV series called Dogs with Dunbar and has appeared on numerous TV and radio series, including Dash Village (Japan) and the Today Show (US).

He’s given more than 1,000 workshops and seminars around the world for veterinarians and dog trainers in an effort to popularize off-leash puppy socialization classes, owner-friendly and dog-friendly dog training, and temperament modification.

Ian has consulted on a variety of movies (documentaries, full length features, and animation, including Pixar’s Up). He’s also twice spoken at the prestigious E. G. Conference.

After founding the Association of Pet Dog Trainers in 1993, Ian was inducted into the Dog Fancy Hall of Fame with four of his heroes: Lassie, Balto, Konrad Lorenz, and James Herriot.

Ian’s training methods focus on rewarding positive behavior with affirmation and treats, instead of trying to correct negative behaviors through forced submission.

Before and After Getting Your Puppy: The Positive Approach to Raising a Happy, Healthy, and Well-Behaved Dog shows you how to raise the perfect puppy.

Few dog trainers have not been influenced by Dr. Dunbar’s dog-friendly philosophy. In the 70s, he sparked a dramatic shift in puppy training, away from drill sergeant adult dog training classes based on competitive obedience and leash correction and toward a positive approach that used treats, toys, and games as rewards for teaching basic manners, preventing behavior problems, and modifying their temperament. Before Dr. Dunbar there weren’t any classes for puppy training, very few family dog classes, and not too much fun in dog training. His positive approach revolutionized the dog training field, particularly puppy training.

In this book, Dr. Dunbar combines his two popular puppy training manuals into a single indexed, value-priced hardcover dog training book. In some clear steps, with easy-to-follow puppy training milestones and helpful pictures, he presents a structured yet playful and humorous plan for raising a wonderful dog. His guide is based around 6 developmental milestones: evaluating puppy’s progress, your doggy education, errorless house training and chewtoy-training, learning bite inhibition, the world at large, and socialization with people.
