Prisoner of Dieppe, his first of the
I Am Canada Books in 2000. It tells the story of a man who is convinced by a friend to enlist for WWII only to be sent to the disastrous raid on Dieppe. In the ensuing chaos and terror, the two friends are captured and sent to Germany where they soon begin planning an escape.
More than a decade later in 2011, Hugh Brewster published
Deadly Voyage. The novel tells the story of Jamie Laidlaw who is traveling back to England on the Titanic. He finds new friends and explores interesting forbidden areas on the ship. But then the ship strikes an iceberg and after helping get some people on lifeboats, he finds himself swept overboard and hanging on for life, hoping to survive.
In 2012, Brewster published the nonfiction work Gilded Lives in which he combines personal narratives with an account of the fateful crossing of the Titanic. From the likes of writer Helen Churchill Candee to Jacob Astor the millionaire and the Countess of Rothes the aristocrat Noelle, the work offers insights into the sexual mores, culture, politics, and the arts of the time.
