Hannah Arendt is better known as a leading political thinker and philosopher of the twentieth century. Following the rise of Hitler, Arendt had to leave Germany and stayed in Geneva and Prague before she spent half a dozen years in Paris working with Jewish refugee organizations. Three years after moving to Paris, she separated from Gunther Stern her first husband, and got married to Heinrich Blucher. While living in the French capital, she continued to write her biography of Rahel Varnhagen. In 1941, she left Paris with her mother and husband and moved to New York. In the United States, Arendt joined a group of influential intellectuals and writers who were involved in the production of the Partisan Review journal. Hannah Arendt published her most popular work Eichmann in Jerusalem in 1963. In this work, she chronicles her coverage of the trial of Nazi leader Adolf Eichmann as a reporter for the New Yorker magazine. During her time covering the trial, she dove into aspects of the nature of justice, the nature of evil, and Jewish leadership during the Holocaust. Arendt published her first work of the Totalitarianism books, Antisemitism in 1948. In this work, the author explores how antisemitism rose in Western and Central Europe during the 19th century. She asserts that it all began in the 1870s and 1880s with the appearance of antisemitic political parties which paved the way for the Holocaust and its horrors. In 1955, Hannah Arendt published Imperialism in which she looked into the decline of colonial imperialism and the road to the First World War. Through looking at the likes of T.E. Lawrence, Disraeli, Proust, and Cecil Rhodes, she showcases how the times resulted in the disintegration of class society in Europe and the decline of the nation-state, which ultimately resulted in dictatorship and the horrors of the Holocaust.
