H. Craig Heller
H. Craig Heller is a Stanford University professor of human biology and biological sciences. He made his name for his research in neurobiology and especially his studies on thermoregulation, circadian rhythm, sleep, and their implications for memory and learning.
At Stanford, Heller has worked in teaching as well as in administrative roles. As an administrator, he has been an Associate Dean for Research, Director of the Human Biology Program, and Chair of the Biology Department.
For his work in education, Stanley University awarded him the
Kenneth M. Cuthbertson Award and the
Excellence in Teaching Walter J. Forest Award.
Over the years, H. Craig Heller has put forth some significant contributions to how we understand circadian rhythms and sleep and their effect on cognitive function. Heller’s lab has identified pharmacological solutions to enhance memory and learning in studies that have progressed to clinical trials.
Additionally, he has made contributions in the field of human thermoregulation. In this regard, his work has resulted in innovations in technologies that enhance recovery and physical performance through more efficient management of body heat. This has significant implications for people who work in high heat environments and athletes.
Aside from his work in academia, H. Craig Heller has worked on initiatives to improve outcomes for patients with Down Syndrome. He is a
Stanford Down Syndrome Research Center co-director and an adviser to the
Open Medicine Foundation, among other organizations.
Given his interdisciplinary approach, he is a major influence in practical applications and scientific research in human performance and health.
In 2013, H. Craig Heller published the work
Secrets of Sleep Science, in which he looks at the intricacies of sleep science.
In the 24-lecture series, he explores questions such as what sleep is, why we sleep, and how cognition and health are impacted by sleep deprivation. He investigates circadian biology, neurochemistry, and neuroanatomy to explain sleep architecture.
He explains how sleep restores and reverses changes that occur when we are awake and why the brain forces us to sleep to regain full body efficiency.
The author also investigates sleep disorders such as parasomnias, sleep apnea, and insomnia, making use of studies to showcase how sleep impacts metabolism, immunity, memory, and well-being.
