I don’t think I have ever encountered a book that disturbed me more than ‘If You Tell.’ I read and watch plenty of horror. But ‘If You Tell’ is special because it is based on a true story.
At 400 pages, I felt like Gregg Olsen made it too long. At one point, I just wanted to be done with this story. But I couldn’t stop reading. I wanted to know more. In a way, I think this story works best in book format.
The visual representation of the horrors the children suffered would probably scar some audiences for a few hours. But the words from this book will stay with you for months. They also force your mind to conjure worse images than anything a director could ever put on screen.
I don’t know why Gregg chose to tell this story. But I think I’ll stick to pure fiction for the next few weeks, at least until ‘If You Tell’ leaves my system.
