Greg Grunberg is an American film/TV actor and the author of
Nightmare Escape, book one in the
Dream Jumper graphic series. Ben is your ordinary boy until he starts having dreams. In his dreams, he discovers that people from his school, including his close friends Jake and Kaylee, are also there. He books an appointment with one of the best doctors and, to his surprise, finds his friends there too. Turns out the friends, too, are having sleep problems and similar dreams to Ben's.
As the book opens, we find Ben asleep in one of his dreams. He wakes up and informs his mom about the dreams. His mother tells him that they’d visit the doctor after school, but he gets mad and doesn’t want to go. At school, he and his girlfriend Kaylee decide to link up for tutoring after school. Unfortunately, Kaylee never shows up and doesn’t respond to Ben’s calls or texts.
Kaylee doesn’t show up to school the next week, and so Ben goes to the hospital to see the doctor. He is surprised to find Kaylee at the doctor’s office, and it’s soon revealed that Kaylee, too, has sleeping problems and is experiencing the same dreams as Ben.
Ben must travel into the dream world when Ben’s classmates start falling into this unbreakable sleep and find a way to wake them up. With help from a strange companion, Ben must fight to defeat the monster in his friends’ dreams, only if he can harness the power within.
Grunberg has crafted a wonderful protagonist that you’ll love to get to know more. The young boy is intelligent enough to keep journals of his dreams to identify patterns. The use of colorful pictures brings the story to life with plenty of small touches. Though the conclusion opens more doors than it closes, it points ahead to what might come in the following volume.
