Genelle Guzman-McMillan is a Trinidadian American speaker and author whose claim to fame is that she was the last survivor pulled out alive from the rubble of the
World Trade Center, where she had been trapped under heavy debris for more than 27 hours.
On September 11, 2001, she was working in the
North Tower at the offices of the Port Authority when the planes hit. She began to move out with the others, and a few floors down, the entire thing crumbled. Within seconds, she found herself badly injured and trapped under steel and concrete.
Gene would stay under the rubble for more than a full day, dealing with pain, fear, and the thought that she would never be found. At some point, she nearly lost all hope, but somehow kept it by holding onto her growing faith and her family.
Gene Guzman-McMillan was finally pulled from the debris after 27 hours. Her story of survival would be the most remarkable of that day, even as it changed her entire spiritual, mental, and physical life.
Thereafter, she decided to share her story, becoming a speaker on second chances, faith, and survival. She has made it her mission in life to encourage others, particularly those dealing with crises. Gene also works with groups connected to remembrance and disaster relief.
In 2011, Genelle Guzman-McMillan wrote her story titled
Angel in the Rubble.
Following the collapse of the North Tower, she found herself trapped underneath twisted steel and concrete, unable to move. Time felt heavy and slow, and for more than a day, she had to battle intense loneliness, pain, and fear that she would never be found alive.
She initially lost hope, but then she reflected on her faith and life even as she prayed. This gave her the strength to hold on until she was pulled out alive.
It is a work that combines faith with suffering to show how one can find strength even in the most crushing, darkest circumstances.
