Gary Hoppenstand
Gary Hoppenstand was born on November 23rd, 1954 and is currently 70 years old.
Gary is an editor of various anthologies. A professor at Michigan State University, the first book which he edited was "The Dime Novel Detective". At the time of publication, he was participating in BGSU's popular culture program as a doctoral student.
Interestingly, the cover of that book features the "Nick Carter Library" on it. However, there is no Nick Carter story within.
"The Dime Novel Detective" contained five stories featuring Old King Brady, Old Cap Collier, Old Sleuth, Bob Brooks, The Detective, and Young King Brady.
Gary co-edited his next anthology with Ray B. Brown. It was released in 1983 and titled "The Defective Detective in the Pulps".
The book "Clive Barker's Short Stories" is an analytical look at numerous short stories by Clive and how, although they are horror stories, they don't rely on violence but instead the style and masterful sense of the language. It's a very interesting study on the prose of
Clive Barker.
Gary was the editor of The Midnight Sun, and during his course as editor there, he was nominated for two World Fantasy Awards.
The first was on 1977, and the second was in 1978. Both nominations were in the special award, non-professional category.
Gary also won a Best Textbook/Reference Book award in 1997 for his work on the anthology Popular Fiction from the Popular Culture Association. Then in 2007, his work as editor of the Greenwood World Encyclopedia of Popular Culture resulted in the same award but in the Reference/Primary Source Work Category.
Along with book awards, Gary has also won various top scholarly honors from the Popular Culture Association. He won the 2008 Governing Board Award and, while at Michigan State University, the Paul Varg Alumni Award for Faculty and the William J. Beal Outstanding Faculty Award.
