Gaius Julius Caesar
Gaius Julius Caesar was born on July 16th, 0100. Gaius passed away March 20th, 0044 at 56 years old. Gaius Julius Caesar was born in Suburra, Rome, Roman Empire.
Gaius Julius Caesar was a Roman general and statesman. He was a member of the First Triumvirate, and led the Roman armies in the Gallic Wars before he defeated his political rival Pompey in a civil war and then became dictator from 49 BC until he was assassinated in 44 BC. He played a vital role in the events which led to the Roman Republic’s demise and the rise of the Roman Empire.
Crassus, Caesar, and Pompey formed the First Triumvirate in 60 BC, which was an informal political alliance which dominated Roman politics for a number of years. Their efforts to amass political power were opposed by many in the Senate, among them was Cato the Younger with private support from Cicero.
Caesar rose to become one of the most powerful politicians in all of the Roman Republic through a series of military victories during the Gallic Wars, completed in 51 BC, which greatly expanded Roman territory. During this time, he invaded Britain and built this bridge across the river Rhine.
Such achievements, and support from his veteran army threatened to eclipse Pompey’s standing. The alliance between Caesar and Pompey slowly broke down and Pompey had realigned himself with the Senate, by 50 BC.
His command was expiring and the Gallic Wars having ended, the Senate ordered Caesar to step down from his military command and go back to Rome. But early in 49 BC, he defied the Senate by crossing the Rubicon and marched toward Rome at the head of an army. It started Caesar’s civil war, which he won, leaving him in a position of almost unchallenged power and influence in 45 BC.
After he assumed control of government and pardoning numerous enemies, he set upon vigorous reform and building program.
Commentaries on the Gallic War is one of the most important historical works of the ancient world. It’s a firsthand account of the conflict between the Roman Republic and the Gallic tribes of northern Italy from 58 to 50 BC.
The book provides a unique insight into the tactics, strategies, and politics of this conflict, and a vivid description of the places and the people of this time.
Written in a concise and clear style, this is still an essential source of information for students and scholars studying the ancient world. They provide this invaluable resource for comprehending the culture and history of the Roman Republic and its interaction with other powers in the Mediterranean.
This offers a detailed analysis of the various military campaigns and their outcomes, and a vivid portrait of the politics and people of this era.
