G.P. Charles
G.P. Charles is a pen name used by Claire Ashgrove to write adult epic fantasy and middle-grade fantasy. The author worked in fantasy game design and web development for a decade before switching to writing fiction. In addition to writing as G.P. Charles, Ashgrove has also written as Sophia Garrett and Tori St. Claire. She uses multiple names because her writing in different genres can be so vastly different than what readers might be used to from her.
Garrett is the name she uses to write historical romance, and St. Claire is for writing books in the contemporary romance genre. With Charles, her passion is for writing epic fantasy. She is best known for writing The Curse of the Templars Series under her own name.
She wrote her first book when she was in her junior year of high school. Although that novel has never been published, it offered her valuable lessons that she has applied in her career. Charles kept the hobby going for twenty years before eventually turning it into a profession.
Charles made her debut in the
Unstoppable anthology with the short story
Instinct, which she co-wrote with Bryan Thomas Schmidt. The story takes place in Jonathan Mayberry's Joe Ledger universe. Charles and Schmidt's story is about Joe Ledger's dog, Ghost.
She teamed with Bryan Thomas Schmidt again for the young adult science fiction anthology,
The Hitherto Secret Experiments of Marie Curie. The two co-wrote
The Magic of Science. The anthology takes place within the historical world of Marie Curie's childhood.
Charles lives on a farm in Missouri where she raises horses and chickens. The family aims to become self-sufficient and revitalize heirloom breeds and crops. She is also the mother of two boys. The author has said she has a passion for history, which she uses to influence her stories and world development. Her other hobbies include soccer, spending time outdoors, and working with computers.
