Frank Castelluccio
Frank Castelluccio is the author of
The Other Side of Ethel Mertz. When people think of
I Love Lucy, they usually think of Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz. Desi even wrote his own memoir,
A Book, which was published in 1976. While many books have focused on Lucy’s life and career, not much had been written about the show’s other two stars—Bill Frawley and Vivian Vance. In fact, there’s still no full-length book dedicated to Frawley.
That changed in 1998, when Frank Castelluccio and Alvin Walker published
The Other Side of Ethel Mertz: The Life Story of Vivian Vance. Until then, there had been no detailed account of Vivian’s life. A year later, in 1999, another book was released—
Meet the Mertzes—but it was unauthorized and didn’t explore her story as deeply.
This book reveals that Vivian Vance was far more than just Lucy’s sidekick on
I Love Lucy. She was a talented, classically trained actress who worked tirelessly to pursue her dreams. Born in Kansas, she moved to New Mexico, then to Broadway, and eventually to Hollywood. Along the way, she won the hearts of TV audiences in
I Love Lucy,
The Lucy Show, and many other Lucy-related projects, continuing until her death from cancer in 1979.
But her life wasn’t easy. Her mother, Mae Jones, was harsh and highly critical, leaving Vivian with lifelong struggles with self-doubt, depression, and anxiety. Despite this, Vivian didn’t hide her pain. She was one of the first celebrities to speak openly about mental illness. She used her fame to help others—visiting psychiatric hospitals, offering comfort to people in need, and giving her time, money, and support to make sure people knew they weren’t alone.
The authors did an excellent job assembling this biography. They interviewed those who knew Vivian best, including friends, family, and coworkers. Even Lucie Arnaz, Lucille Ball’s daughter, contributed stories and called Vivian her mentor.
Vivian Vance was so much more than Ethel Mertz. She was a fighter, a gifted actress, and a compassionate soul who used her voice to help others find theirs. This book is a heartfelt tribute and a valuable piece of television history.
