Francis S. Collins
Francis S. Collins (Francis Sellers Collins) was born on April 14th, 1950 and is currently 75 years old. Francis S. Collins was born in Staunton, Virginia, USA. Collins attended the University of Virginia where he received a Bachelor of Science degree, Yale University where he received an MS degree and a PhD degree and the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill where he received an MD degree.
Francis Collins is an accomplished American geneticist who made his name for his leadership in major scientific organizations and genetic research.
He gained notoriety while working in research at the University of Michigan. It was during this time that he discovered genes that he linked to Huntington’s disease, neurofibromatosis, and cystic fibrosis.
In 1993, Collins became the leader of the U.S. government's
Human Genome Project after being appointed to head the
National Human Genome Research Institute.
While there was a lot of competition from J. Craig Venter’s
Celera Genomics, they collaborated to complete a draft of the human genome in 2000. In 2003, they completed sequencing, opening doors for treating, diagnosing, and preventing genetic disorders.
Francis Collins was always at the forefront in championing the ethical use of genetic data. During his tenure, he lobbied lawmakers to come up with laws to protect the use of personal genetic information by science.
In 2008, he stepped down from the
NHGRI only for President Barack Obama to appoint him
National Institutes of Health Director the following year. He held his role as director until 2021, and during the pandemic in 2020, he supported treatment and vaccine research.
A man of faith, he has blended his faith and science in his literary pursuits. In 2020, he was appointed to the
Pontifical Academy of Sciences in the Vatican, and for his contributions to religion and science, he won the
Templeton Prize.
He remains one of the most prominent figures in the science domain, respected for his stance on ethical research and achievements in human genetics.
Francis Collins published his first work,
The Language of God, in 2006. As a geneticist and man of faith, he reflects on the harmony between faith and science.
Having led the
Human Genome Project, he tells of how he went from being an atheist to a believer in the Christian faith. He argues that there is a universal moral law inherent in every human being, and this points to a divine origin which he calls
BioLogos.
He provides a critique of both
Intelligent Design and
Creationism for their shortcomings and asserts that there is a middle way that embraces both creationism and scientific evidence.
Three years after his debut work came out, he published
The Language of Life, in which he showcases how breakthroughs in genetics are changing how we practice healthcare.
He explains how doctors are using DNA to predict a patient's risk of developing certain conditions, make treatment programs, and potentially prevent the occurrence of such conditions.
Using real-life examples, he explores topics such as Pharmacogenomics, diabetes, and cancer, even as he also explores privacy and ethical concerns.
