F.F. Bruce's full name Frederick Fyvie Bruce was a distinguished Bible theologian and scholar from Scotland who had a profound influence on the modern evangelical understanding of the Christian bible.
Bruce, who is often affectionately remembered as the Dean of Evangelical Scholarship, was a University of Manchester Rylands Professor of Biblical Exegesis and Criticism for nearly two decades. He was called a giant in biblical exegesis, a man of integrity, a lover of the bible and master of languages.
His father was Peter Fyvie Bruce, an itinerant evangelist of the
Plymouth Brethren who had a lasting imprint on his life’s work and faith. For all his life, Bruce was a member of the community of independent congregations identifying as
Christian Brethren. In 1979, while he was at the University of Manchester he founded the
Christian Brethren Archive.
He was still a child when he developed an aptitude for languages and a love for the Scriptures and these would remain with him for the rest of his life. In addition to mastering the bible in original languages and multiple translations, he was also fluent in many European and classic languages such as Aramaic, Greek, Hebrew and Latin.
Bruce got his start as an academic when he got a job at Edinburgh University teaching Greek. At Sheffield university, he headed the Department of Biblical Literature and History. Between 1959 and 1978, he supervised more doctoral students in biblical studies than any other professor of his time.
Over the course of his career, F.F. Bruce published thousands of articles and reviews, hundreds of essays and nearly fifty books. For more than three decades, he was the editor of the
Evangelical Quarterly and was a contributing editor for
Christianity Today for more than twenty years.
Bruce’s most widely circulated work is the 1943 published
The New Testament Documents: Are They Reliable. The work provides a defense of the reliability of the Christian scriptures as it explores the origin and dates of various books of the New Testament. Bruce came to the conclusion that the New Testament is the most attested work from the classical era.
In his work,
The Epistle to the Galatians, F.F. Bruce did a phrase by phrase exegesis of the Greek text of the epistle. He provided the geographical and historical context, in addition to discussions with other scholars, as he bridged the gap in hermeneutics between students and scholars.
F.F. Bruce’s
The Book of Acts was a work in which he combined theological, linguistic and historical expertise, as he offered an overarching analysis of Luke’s account of the church during the first century. He offered a detailed examination of the cultural and historical context of the test, as he drew on extra biblical and biblical sources to try to provide an understanding of the
Book of Acts.
