Eric Bischoff
Eric Bischoff (Eric Aaron Bischoff) was born on May 27th, 1955 and is currently 69 years old. Eric Bischoff was born in Roseville, Michigan, USA.
Eric Bischoff is a professional wrestling booker, podcaster, promoter, TV producer, and performer. Eric is best known for serving as Executive Producer and later the Senior Vice President of World Championship Wrestling and later the on-screen General Manager of WWE’s
Raw brand. He’s also worked with TNA where he served as the Executive Producer of TNA iMPACT!. In 2021, he was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame.
With his amateur background in martial arts, he’s also sporadically performed as an in-ring competitor, and is a 1 time WCW Hardcore Champion. He also headlined the 1998 Road Wild PPV, teaming up with “Hollywood” Hulk Hogan versus Jay Leno and Diamond Dallas Page.
In 1987, he got his start in wrestling, working for the American Wrestling Association (which was based in Minneapolis, Minnesota) under Verne Gagne’s ownership. By 1989, he was an on-air interviewer and the host of the AWA until 1991, when the company folded.
He was working in sales department of the AWA’s syndicated programming and became an on-air personality basically at the last minute and on accident. Larry Nelson, employed as an AWA announcer, got arrested for suspicion of DUI. Due to his sudden unavailability, Verne and Greg Gagne opted to recruit Eric to fill in for interviews. Since Eric was already wearing a suit and tie and he was already in studio, they thought he’d be a good fit.
After a failed WWF audition, where he was asked to give an interview to a broom, he joined WCW in 1991 as a C-show announcer and made his debut at that year’s Great American Bash. He reported to Jim Ross and Tony Schiavone. After Bill Watts resigned from the company, Eric went to Bill Shaw and Bob Dhue in order to apply for the Executive Producer gig. He got hired even though Jim Ross and Tony Schiavone were the top candidates to take over.
By 1994, Eric was promoted up to Senior Vice President, which put him in charge of everything WCW. He convinced the executives at Turner to better finance WCW so they could compete with WWF.
Eric moved WCW production to Disney-MGM Studios in Orlando, Florida. Hulk Hogan, who had been filming there was approached by Eric and Ric Flair to sign with WCW. He invested money in production values and increased the amount of WCW PPVs (first 7 a year, then 10, and then 1 a month). He also started a weekly live show on TNT:
WCW Monday Nitro, which went up against
Monday Night Raw.
Controversy Creates Cash is Eric’s first autobiography. He tells the story about the rise and fall of his organization in its no-holds-barred, head-to-head ratings war with WWE (
Raw vs.
Nitro), and about how he helped shape the sports entertainment business into the billion dollar industry that it is to this today.
Eric, the former WCW president, gets into how he was hired by Ted Turner to directly compete with the WWF, which is an assignment that he recruited top talent before some financial difficulties led to WCW’s takeover by Vince McMahon.
