The daughter of an Army colonel, Arthur Henry Bagnold and Ethel his wife, she spent much of her childhood in Jamaica. As an adult, she worked on one of Frank Harris’ magazines, who she had a romantic relationship with. Bagnold and Harris feature in the 1919 novel

During World War I, Enid Bagnold worked as a nurse for the
Voluntary Aid Detachment organization. However, she was critical of the failings of the organization which earned her much fame but got her dismissed. She would then work as a driver and chronicled her experiences in
Diary Without Dates, which she published in 1917.
Enid got married to the former
Reuters chairman Sir Roderick Jones even though she still used her name professionally. They had a glamorous social life living in London at Hyde Park Gate where they had prominent neighbors such as Jacob Epstein and Winston Churchill.
In March 1981, Enid Bagnold died of a respiratory illness. Her autobiography was published in 1987 and offered insights into the many contradictory and problematic aspects of her life.
