Emily Fridlund was born in, Edina, Minnesota United States. Fridlund attended Principia College where she received a Bachelor's Degree, Washington University where she received a Master of Fine Arts in Fiction and University of Southern California where she received a Ph.D in Literature and Creative Writing.
