Like some seed planted in my body Crank by Ellen Hopkins was an unforgettable read that swept me into the whirlwind of mistakes and choices, sex and drugs. Once I was done with the novel, a little demon appeared at my side as it whispered the consequences of doing drugs that has me shuddering.
Glass is a grittier follow up to Crank and even though I was initially skeptical if it was any good, it turned out to be quite good. The story was more believable in terms of how Kristina struggles with her addiction.
Even though the first and second of the Crank series were the best I also liked Fallout the third which is an incredibly powerful story. Told in the perspective of Kristina’s children it was good in showing the long term effects of addiction but was not as captivating as the first two.
‘Crank’ is disturbing. First of all, no. This is not the novel version of the Jason Statham movie, which was my first assumption. Secondly, I initially thought that ‘Crank’ was a powerful, masterfully written story about the demons that plague human beings every day.
But then I learned that Ellen’s daughter was an addict, and ‘Crank’ became incredibly disturbing to me in the same way that a military thriller will hit home in a different way when you realize that the author is a war vet that took inspiration from his real life.
I still recommend ‘Crank’ to new readers. But it stayed with me for longer than I expected.
