Elizabeth was the oldest of 12 kids, and started writing poetry when she was eleven. Her mom’s collection of her poems forms one of the biggest extant collection of juvenilia by any English writer.
Elizabeth was educated at home and was tutored by Daniel McSwiney along with her oldest brother. She started writing verses when she was just 4 years old.
She was reading novels at the age of 6, having been entranced by Pope’s translations of
Homer when she was 8, she studied Greek when she was 10, and wrote her own Homeric epic called The Battle of Marathon: A Poem when she was 11.
During the 1840s, she was introduced to literary society through John Kenyon, her patron and distant cousin. Her first adult collection of poems was published in 1838, and she wrote prolifically from 1841 to 1844, producing translation, poetry, and prose.
It was this prolific output that made her a rival as a candidate for poet laureate to Tennyson on Wordsworth’s death. Her collection
Poems brought her great success, and attracted the admiration from Robert Browning, a writer. Their courtship, correspondence, and marriage were all carried out in secret, out of fear of her dad’s disapproval. She was indeed disinherited when he found out.
